Netflix has unveiled a fresh trailer for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, offering the clearest glimpse yet into the third chapter of Rian Johnson’s acclaimed whodunit series.
Released in mid-November, the new footage signals a decisive tonal shift for the franchise, steering it into darker, more foreboding territory. It also reconfirms Daniel Craig’s return as detective Benoit Blanc, who faces what the film pointedly frames as his “most dangerous case yet.” The film begins its limited theatrical run on November 26, ahead of its worldwide premiere on Netflix on December 12.
The trailer opens on an austere church interior, a departure from the opulent mansions, estates and sun-drenched retreats of the earlier films. Craig’s Blanc, noticeably more burdened, intones the words “The impossible crime,” as quick flashes reveal a congregation rattled by a death that defies straightforward explanation.
Set within a close-knit parish in upstate New York, the central mystery appears rooted in old grievances and concealed hierarchies, drawing Blanc into a community where every relationship may hold a piece of the truth.

Johnson once again serves as writer and director, retaining the structural hallmarks that defined Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion (2022): a self-contained mystery, a tangle of competing motives, and an ensemble cast built from A-list talent.
For this chapter, the cast includes Kerry Washington, Josh Brolin, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Thomas Haden Church, and Daryl McCormack, many of whom portray figures within the same church community. Their shared orbit creates a more enclosed, pressure-cooker environment than in the previous films, where every character’s proximity heightens the stakes.

For Daniel Craig, Wake Up Dead Man marks his third turn as Benoit Blanc, a role that has steadily deepened from genial Southern sleuth to a detective navigating increasingly personal and ethically entangled investigations. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will continue its festival run at the London Film Festival, where early viewers have described it as Johnson’s most atmospheric and emotionally charged entry in the series.
Production wrapped in the summer of 2024 after filming in London and across rural locations designed to stand in for upstate New York. The title Wake Up Dead Man draws inspiration from the 1997 U2 song of the same name, continuing Johnson’s tradition of naming each installment after a track with thematic resonance.

Although the broader plot remains tightly under wraps, the trailer points to a more confined and tension-laden story than its predecessors. The church at the film’s center appears to operate as both refuge and fault line, with fractures among parish leaders, whispers of past wrongdoing, and a community instinctively protective of its own. For Blanc, it suggests a case shaped not just by clues, but by long-brewing resentments simmering beneath the surface.
With Wake Up Dead Man, Johnson continues to widen the scope of what a Knives Out mystery can be, raising the stakes for its detective and the world he must navigate. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery opens in select theaters on November 26 before its global release on Netflix on December 12.
