Mumbai singer-songwriter and multidisciplinary artist Jhahnaa, aka Jahnavi Kanji Nirmal, explores the many sides of love on her new album Love & Alchemy, moving through attraction, fear, heartbreak and the comfort of being loved back.
The seven-track record opens with “Drunk”, which captures the happiness and rush of falling for someone, before “Love Again” brings in the fear that the same person might leave. “Crawling Out” takes a darker turn, describing a love that first becomes a source of light before consuming its subject.
The album’s sharpest turn comes with “The Knife”, a portrait of love as something capable of wounding. Its heavier sound, influenced by Jhahnaa’s longtime love of Evanescence, makes it one of the record’s most notable departures from its pop core.
Another track, “Blow A Kiss” plays with the push and pull of relationships, while “Bridges” looks back at what gets lost when ambition takes priority over companionship. “Gone Away, Here Now” closes on the steadier love found in family and close friends.
Jhahnaa’s synesthesia also informs the album’s visual language, shaping the way she approaches her work as a composer, stylist, art director and designer. The accompanying visuals draw on dark academia and chemistry imagery, reflecting her interest in both music and her favourite school subject.
“I hope people feel excited to fall in love and become love themselves instead of fearing it,” Jhahnaa says. “Love is such a powerful force that we need as a cure for this tough world. There’s also a darker side to the album which is that — if something doesn’t work out and brings you pain, one can channel that pain through alchemy. The void becomes something that is tangible and it feels blissful eventually.”
Produced by Azamaan Hoyvoy and mastered by Ashyar Balsara, Love & Alchemy brings together the different shades of love into a record, from its excitement and vulnerability to the pain that comes with it.
