The 83rd Venice Film Festival has officially drawn to a close, with the festival’s top prizes handed out during its closing ceremony on Saturday, September 12.
While several of the competition’s most talked-about titles entered the final stretch as potential contenders, the jury, led by Maggie Gyllenhaal, delivered a selection that balanced established favourites with a few notable surprises.
The coveted Golden Lion for Best Film went to Danish filmmaker May el-Toukhy’s Woman Unknown, starring Mathilde Arcel, which also earned Arcel the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress. Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love, another of the festival’s widely discussed titles, followed with the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize, while John Malkovich took home Best Actor for his performance in Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine.
Other major honours included the Silver Lion for Best Director for Ilya Khrzhanovsky for DAU, the Special Jury Prize for Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor’s NAZA, and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor or Actress for Malou Khebizi in 15/18 (A Place to Heal).
