Swedish-American jazz vocalist, artist, and songwriter Åsa Orbison intertwines gentle instrumentals with honeyed vocals on “Lullaby of Birdland,” offering an enchanting peek at her upcoming project, Swedish Jazz Standards, an eight-track collection that reimagines beloved American jazz standards through the lens of Sweden’s rich jazz tradition.
Minimalist yet enriching, the sultry track offers a refreshing take on iconic 1950s jazz number “Lullaby of Birdland,” composed by George Shearing with lyrics by George David Weiss, transforming the luscious feels of the original track while infusing a uniquely graceful charm.
Named after the legendary New York club Birdland, the polished production showcases an elegant yet free-flowing soundscape that captivates us with tender nocturnal sensibilities. Intimate and universal all at once, the track is as soothing as it anthemic.
A showcase of her upcoming project which highlights a cultural dialogue embedded in classic American jazz songwriting and Sweden’s lyrical nuance and sonic heritage. Produced by Roy Orbison Jr, and recorded in Nashville and developed in collaboration with world-renowned guitarist Ulf Wakenius, known from the Oscar Peterson quartet, the project is rooted in Åsa’s intricate blend of classic stylings and contemporary twists.
Blending tradition and innovation with distinct creativity, Åsa Orbison continues to build a towering presence in the world of jazz.
