Sam Macdonald and Maya Jordan turn a chance encounter into dance-pop on “Chameleon,” a disco-leaning collaboration built around the rush of finding an unexpected connection.
The song traces back to a real love-at-first-sight moment at a grassroots music jam in Cambridge. Macdonald, the Cambridge producer and 2024 NMG Awards Producer of the Year, gives the track its late-night pulse through shimmering synths, funky bass and a groove that keeps moving without becoming overly polished. Jordan’s vocals bring the other half of the equation, pairing a strong pop delivery with the kind of warmth that keeps the song grounded.
There is an obvious dancefloor appeal here, but “Chameleon” works best in the space between club record and pop singalong. Its disco influence recalls the current pop revival without leaning too heavily on it, while the production leaves enough room for Jordan’s voice to carry the excitement of the story. It is easy to picture the song working just as well on a late-night drive as it does in a crowded room.
For Jordan, the track adds another release to a career that already moves between music and medicine. The British-American singer-songwriter, actor and NHS doctor also performs with Symphonica Orchestra and co-hosts the Cambridge Funk Jam, making the song’s origin particularly fitting.
“We hope that people can truly feel the joy and euphoria of this song,” Macdonald and Jordan say. “We hope people will be singing along, bopping their head, dancing and experiencing a moment of fun escapism from their daily life.”
“Chameleon” doesn’t overcomplicate its premise. It takes that first-flush feeling and gives it a bassline, a disco groove and three minutes of uncomplicated fun.
