World Photography Week 2026 : 9 photographers, 3 themes, 1 stunning photo essay

World Photography Week 2026 is celebrated from August 12 to August 26, 2026 annually.

Celebrating the history, craft, and art of photography, the week is a showcase of creativity and connection, framed by equal parts passion and skill.

To mark the week, Lyrical Muse invited photographers to submit their work to our special photo essay, interpreting the following three themes :

SHADOWS & LIGHTS : The interplay of light, shadow, contrast.
LIFE IN MOTION : Movement, energy and moments captured in flux.
SOLITUDE & SWARMS : Isolation, togetherness, crowds, collectives and the space between.

Ashik Muraleedharan

Emerging photographer Ashik Muraleedharan interpreted all two themes, showcasing a diverse approach to his craft.

Of his photographs, he said “My practice is rooted in a deep engagement with culture, memory, and the changing landscapes of everyday life. Through a slow and attentive approach, I seek to preserve stories, traditions, and moments that might otherwise fade with time. Believing that art carries both purpose and responsibility, I view creative practice as a way of contributing meaningfully to society. My work reflects a commitment to observation, care, and craft, creating space for reflection and connection.”

Arin Paul

Kolkata-based photographer Arin Paul who primarily shoots with phone channels this year’s theme of ‘Home’ through the ‘Shadows & Lights’ theme.

“A quiet part of my grandfather’s room, photographed after he was gone.”

Shubhangi Agrawal

Emerging photographer Shubhangi Agrawal interprets the ‘Shadows & Lights’ theme with a deeply personal and inspiring take on conventional standards of beauty.

She shares, “As a woman with vitiligo, I share the journey of navigating societal beauty standards in India. My first bright spot was discovered at the age of 11, and I still remember the worried look on my mom’s face. My muse, Riya, also got diagnosed with vitiligo at the same age. She recalls how difficult it was to go to school because her peers made fun of the way she looked. Through my photo essay, I aim to shed light on the emotional toll of vitiligo, not from the condition itself, but from how society perceives it. The photos are an attempt to portray the emotional journey of fear, resilience and acceptance of a young woman with vitiligo.”

Sakthi Chithamparam

Hobby photographer Sakthi Chithamparam interprets ‘Life In Motion’ with simplicity and poignant impact in equal parts.

Sakthi says, “I was inspired by this simple moment of everyday life in Pondicherry. The cyclist moving through the vibrant blue surroundings caught my attention. I would like viewers to notice the contrast between movement and the stillness of the architecture.”

Vansh Bhatnagar

Hobby photographer Vansh Bhatnagar shares frames that intersect the themes of ‘Shadows & Lights’ and ‘Solitude & Swarms’ as viewed by him at the Ghazipur flower market.

He says, “The market was a total overload but what actually caught my attention was the quiet contrast hidden inside all that noise. What inspired me was the way people carve out their own personal spaces in the middle of chaos. You’ll have hundreds of people pushing past each other, yet someone will be completely lost in thought, taking a quiet breather. I wanted to capture those subtle human moments the distant gazes, the fatigue, the brief pauses and how the harsh market lighting fell across their faces and textures.”

Mrinmay Rabha

Mrinmay Rabha blends the blur of motion amidst humanity with the solitude of life in the wild with juxtaposition of two themes ‘Solitude & Swarms’ and ‘Life In Motion’

Mrinmay says, “These photographs were inspired by moments where light, movement and solitude naturally came together. From the quiet glow of the river and the energy of a celebration to the solitary gaze of a wild animal, I wanted to capture not just what I saw but the emotion and story within each moment.”

Saptarshi Maitra

Saptarshi Maitra who primarily shoots with their phone shares one stunning image which captures duality at its best under the ‘Shadows & Lights’ theme.

Of the photograph, Saptarshi says, “This photograph is portraying duality of life. How human and animal is connected to each other’s life and how a good friendship is developed between then. The photograph is also showing the trust between two different creatures. They are sleeing calmly and have trust to each other.”

Ritul Aggarwal

Ritul Aggarwal’s signature interplay of light and shadows which captures how light transforms ordinary moments into something meaningful makes for the perfect encapsulation of the ‘Shadows & Lights’ theme.

Speaking of the shot, Ritul says, “This photograph is a personal favourite. I clicked it during a family trip to Omkareshwar, India, early in the morning, around 6 AM. The soft morning light, the bridge, and the surrounding view created such a peaceful and soothing atmosphere. It was one of those moments where the view itself felt worth pausing for and capturing.”
