International Day of Happiness : We asked people about their simplest, smallest joys

International Day of Happiness

International Day of Happiness is celebrated around the world every year on March 20.

Established by the United Nations in 2012, the day recognises happiness as well as emotional and social wellbeing as measures of progress for individuals and society.

To mark International Day of Happiness – which encourages people to be more supportive and prioritise kindness – we asked people for the small things that bring them joy.

Here’s what people had to share!

Early morning walks

One contributor, Bindu shared that getting up for a brisk early morning walk is something that gives her happiness. She says, ” The cool breeze on my face and listening to chirping birds while walking perks me up and I feel happy.”

Favourite songs

Arundathy Bharadwaj, who regularly shares submissions with Lyrical Muse, explains the impact of her favourite songs, saying, “Listening to my favourite song always uplifts me and changes my mood. It gives me an outlet to breathe free and be hopeful about life again.”

Cuddles with a beloved pet

An anonymous contributor says, ” My pet Cookie waking up at my feet, turning over and nudging me for a belly rub! My family are immensely happy for her to have to come into our lives (we adopted her six years ago).”

Quiet evenings

Alisha’s relatable submission reads : “Returning home on time just to lay in bed and do nothing.”

Morning coffee with loved ones

Aadishree Dixit‘s heartwarming submission reads, “Coffee with my parents after I’m done with a morning walk. Such a great way to start the day before we all go forward with our work days.”

Sweet treats, rainy days and good stories

Another regular contributor Dr. Riddhima Bose reflects on finding joy in life’s simplest indulgences. She shares, “There’s something magical about the little moments, a warm chocolate lava cake or rich caramel pudding paired with a large mug of coffee, rainy days that slow everything down, long drives with no fixed destination, the thrill of a great murder mystery or energetic dance numbers that make me forget the world. These small, everyday pleasures come together to create a sense of calm and happiness that doesn’t need grand occasions.”

A special picture

Another anonymous submission explains that a picture of the deity they worship set as the their phone wallpaper brings them happiness and peace, saying, “Her smile make me smile.”
