Another Friday, another batch of new music to dig into. This week’s picks move between country, pop and rock, with each artist bringing a very different perspective to familiar feelings: leaving home, finding your way back to yourself, getting caught in your own head, and learning when to let someone go.

From Julie Eddy’s nostalgic “‘74 Nova” to Alaina May’s quietly aching “Tourniquet,” these are four releases that caught our attention for what they are saying as much as how they sound.

Here’s what we’re listening to this New Music Friday.

Julie Eddy – “‘74 Nova”

Julie Eddy turns a family hand-me-down into a story about leaving home without leaving your roots behind on “‘74 Nova.” Inspired by her dad’s first car, the country single uses the car to explore the tension between nostalgia and ambition. Its strongest moments come in the chorus, where Eddy captures the urge to keep moving while still carrying a piece of home with you.

What makes the song work is how naturally Eddy connects small-town familiarity with the excitement of chasing something beyond it. It feels rooted in where she comes from, while still looking ahead.

Rami – “Save Myself”

Rami puts her vocal range to work on “Save Myself,” a pop ballad about finding your way back to yourself after a period of loss and uncertainty. She reworks the familiar fairytale image of a woman waiting in a tower, singing, “I was tired of waiting for someone / to come rescue me from what I’d done,” before turning the story on its head with, “I was the prince here after all.”

That shift gives the song its emotional weight. By the final refrain, Rami has moved from waiting to be rescued to recognising that sometimes you have to be the one who shows up for yourself.

McMillin – “I LOSE”

McMillin turns the spiral of overthinking into something much heavier on “I LOSE,” where every possible choice seems to end in defeat. The lyrics keep circling that uncertainty, from “Freezing up with every choice I have to choose” to the blunt conclusion, “And in every case I lose.”

That tension carries into the production, with airy synths set against aggressive guitars before the track drops into a crushing half-time breakdown and later dissolves into a hazier synth passage. “I LOSE” stays firmly inside that mental battle rather than trying to resolve it.

Alaina May – “Tourniquet”

Alaina May’s “Tourniquet” sits between wanting someone back and knowing it is time to let them go. Built around gently unfolding acoustic instrumentation and May’s tender vocal, the song draws from her first year in New York and the lingering pull of a relationship she was trying to leave behind.

Its title becomes the song’s central image, with “tourniquet the arm you held” turning the act of ending a connection into something painful but necessary.
