Kannada actor Anant Nag to be honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Veteran actor Anant Nag will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024, India’s highest honour in cinema.

The Government of India announced the honour on September 16, with the award set to be presented at the 72nd National Film Awards in Kevadia, Gujarat, on September 22.

Nag becomes only the second Kannada actor to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, following Dr. Rajkumar, who was honoured in 1995. The award, instituted in 1969, recognises outstanding contributions to the growth and development of Indian cinema.

The actor began his film career with the Kannada film Sankalp and made his Hindi debut in Ankur. Over more than five decades, he has appeared in more than 300 films across Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Marathi cinema. His screen work also includes the widely remembered television series Malgudi Days, based on the stories of R.K. Narayan.

Nag, who celebrated 50 years in cinema in 2023, has received several honours during his career, including five Filmfare Awards, five Karnataka State Best Actor Awards and the Padma Bhushan in 2025.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award will now add another national honour to a career that has moved across languages, formats and generations of Indian cinema.
