Replaced By Robots turn their attention to the uncertainty of love on “Whiskey (Bourbon, Gin or Rye…it’s alright to cry),” a new single that finds the alternative-rock trio leaning into a more organic side of their sound.
The song circles the familiar problem of falling in and out of love, then questioning every decision that follows. It is less interested in answering the usual questions about falling in and out of love than in sitting with them as the narrator second-guesses what happened, what could have gone differently and whether any of it was the right choice. There is a touch of J. Alfred Prufrock in that indecision, but the song keeps its feet firmly in the present.
The shift is audible, too. Where the band has often worked with electronic textures, “Whiskey” settles into a warmer rock arrangement built around atmospheric guitars and understated layers. Adam Wade’s slide guitar and producer Terry Palmer’s lap steel add a country-tinged edge without pulling the song away from its alternative-rock center.
What makes the track work is how little it tries to force. “Whiskey” moves between melancholy and warmth without turning either feeling into a grand statement, giving the uncertainty at its center time to breathe.
Replaced By Robots features Goolkasian of The Elevator Drops, multidisciplinary artist Heather Joy Morgan and Wade of Funeral Party. “Whiskey” will appear on The Experiment #2, following the trio’s debut mini-record, The Experiment #1.
The forthcoming release continues the band’s wider music-and-visual project, which has included an original theme song and an award-winning stop-motion video from Probot Animation’s Damon Wellner.
But on “Whiskey,” the focus stays closer to the ground: love, doubt and the uncomfortable space between knowing you should move on and wondering if you really should.
