New Jersey singer-songwriter Dana DiGangi has released “Good News”, a pop-rock single inspired by a series of setbacks that left her questioning when her efforts would pay off.
The track explores the frustration of doing everything right without seeing the expected results, drawing on a feeling of uncertainty that extends beyond DiGangi’s personal experiences.
“Good News” began as a song DiGangi wrote in her car before taking shape at Lakehouse Recording Studio’s “Track Your Song” event in Asbury Park, New Jersey. She brought a piano demo, chord progressions and a musical mood board to the four-hour session, where she worked with unfamiliar musicians to arrange, record and mix the track before completing its master.
Her perspective as a songwriter is shaped in part by growing up in foster care and the experience of feeling like an outsider. However, “Good News” centres on the broader experience of persistent effort without the desired outcome, rather than autobiography alone.
“I hope that listeners walk away knowing that they are not the only ones who feel like they’re doing everything they possibly can and still coming up short,” DiGangi says. She also leaves room for the possibility that a difficult run will not last forever. “Just because negativity and setback has been your experience so far, doesn’t mean that’s what it will always be.”
For DiGangi, the song’s optimism is less about pretending things are fine than refusing to treat disappointment as a permanent condition. “Good News” frames hope not as certainty that things will improve, but as the possibility that setbacks need not define what comes next.
