Marjane Satrapi, acclaimed 'Persepolis' creator and Oscar-nominated filmmaker, dies at 56

French-Iranian author, illustrator, filmmaker, and activist Marjane Satrapi has died at the age of 56, according to confirmation from the Élysée Palace in Paris.

Satrapi leaves behind a remarkable creative legacy shaped by fearless storytelling, sharp wit and a deeply human perspective.

She rose to international prominence with Persepolis, her groundbreaking graphic memoir that chronicled her childhood in Tehran during the Iranian Revolution and her later years in exile in Europe.

First published in 2000, the work became a global bestseller and introduced millions of readers to a personal, nuanced portrait of Iranian life.

Her influence expanded even further when she co-directed the animated adaptation of Persepolis in 2007. The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and later earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. This solidified Satrapi’s place among the most influential contemporary storytellers of modern generation.

Beyond Persepolis, Satrapi authored celebrated works including Chicken with Plums, Embroideries, and Woman, Life, Freedom, while also directing films such as The Voices and Radioactive.

Throughout her career, she championed the power of art and culture, often using her platform to amplify stories of identity, freedom and resilience.

AFP reported that a member of Satrapi’s close circle said she died “of sadness” a little over a year after the death of her husband, Swedish producer and screenwriter Mattias Ripa, whom she had publicly described as “the love of my life.”

Tributes have poured in from across France and beyond, honoring an artist whose work transcended borders and generations. Through her books and films, Satrapi transformed personal experience into stories that resonated with audiences worldwide.
