London-based singer-songwriter CATLEA returns with “Someone’s Got To”, a deeply personal new single that doubles as the first preview of the upcoming EP Aftermath.
Released on July 17, the acoustic-pop track finds the artist stripping away polished façades in favour of an unflinching account of recovery, resilience and learning to choose self-worth over self-destruction.
Crafted around acoustic guitar, live drums and spacious production, “Someone’s Got To” trades the genre-hopping approach that has defined much of CATLEA’s catalogue for a more intimate sound.
Written during the artist’s journey to sobriety, the song traces the difficult process of breaking destructive patterns, confronting dependency and finding the strength to move forward one decision at a time.
Its emotional centre arrives in the lyric, “If you won’t love me, then I will,” a line that transforms from quiet desperation into an affirmation of self-acceptance as the song unfolds.
“When I originally wrote the song, it wasn’t written with the intention of getting better,” CATLEA says. “It was more of a hopeful thing; an acknowledgment that I needed to love myself more and take better care of myself, because I wasn’t doing that at the time.
The track remained unfinished until sobriety became a reality. After an emotional breakdown during a recording session in Barcelona, CATLEA stepped away from the song, only returning months later to complete it after quitting alcohol. “It felt like “Someone’s Got To” wasn’t allowed to exist until it was true. Finishing the track required myself to live the vow the lyric had set, to find the strength to love myself,” they explain.
The single arrives as CATLEA’s profile continues to grow, with more than 15 million streams, extensive UK touring and the announcement of Aftermath. More than an introduction to the forthcoming EP, “Someone’s Got To” stands as a compelling portrait of recovery, proving that some of the most powerful songs emerge only after life catches up with the words.
