New York-based queer pop powerhouse act Keeana Kee weaves bold flirtation and unapologetic fun together on luscious, high-voltage sapphic anthem “WASABI.”
Sweet and spicy all at once, the vibrant track is a celebration of queer desire, curiosity, and confidence led by danceable groove and seductive vocal stylings to capture the explosive and undeniable chemistry of an attraction that hits hard and fast. Laden with playful tension and cheeky sensuality, the addictive track is juxtaposed against fantasy-leaning, anime-inspired visuals which elevates the addictive dreaminess of the sonics
In conversation with Lyrical Muse, Keeana dives into inspiration behind “WASABI”, the importance of confidence in encouraging queer visibility and the emotional impact she wants to leave on people with her craft.
1. What sparked the inspiration for “WASABI?”
Honestly, I just wanted to create something that feels fearless and addictive. “WASABI” has that spicy energy where you instantly feel it. I was inspired by confidence, nightlife, sensuality, fashion, queer culture — all the things that make people feel alive and unapologetic. I wanted the song to feel like stepping into your power and not caring who’s watching.
2. The song is rooted in an unapologetic and bold vibe — how much does that kind of confidence matter when it comes to queer visibility?
It means everything to me. I think queer visibility becomes even more powerful when it’s confident and authentic. I want my music to feel liberating for people — like a reminder that you don’t have to apologize for who you are, your identity, your sexuality, your expression.
3. What motivates bold explorations in your music? What’s your process in crafting a soundscape that also tells empowering stories?
I’m emotionally driven when I create. Usually I see visuals in my head. I love cinematic sounds, exotic vibes and strong emotions because I want people to escape into the world of the song for a few minutes. I think empowerment comes from being sincere.
4.Tell me a bit about the music video and how that elevates the message/mood of the track?
The video was really important to me because I wanted the visuals to feel just as intense and unapologetic as the song itself. Everything from the styling to the lighting and scenes was planned to create this seductive atmosphere.
5. How would you describe your sound and how has it evolved over time?
I’d describe my sound as Exotic pop with attitude and vulnerability mixed together. Over time I’ve definitely got more into cinamatic pop and into more fearless creatively. I like to experiment with different genres.
6.What’s the biggest challenge in infusing themes of identity and queer visibility into your music? And how do you overcome it?
I think sometimes people try to put queer artists into boxes or expect you to represent things in a very specific way. But queer people are layered and complex like everyone else. I never want my music to feel limited by labels. I just focus on being authentic and telling stories that feel real to me emotionally. That honesty is what people usually connect with the most.
7. For anyone discovering Keeana Kee for the first time, describe your music in 3 words?
Inspiring. Emotional. Exotic.
8. Finally, what’s one question no one has asked you in an interview before that you wish you were asked?
I wish more people asked what kind of emotional impact I want my music to have on people. Because beyond visuals and streaming numbers, that’s what matters most to me. I want people to feel stronger, freer, more confident, and more connected to themselves after listening to my music. That’s always the goal.
