WINACHI lean into grit and groove on defiant new single ‘State of Mind’

Northern UK outfit WINACHI have returned with ‘State of Mind’, a groove-heavy new single lifted from their upcoming EP Coming Up for Air, due later this summer.

Released earlier this month, the track sees the award-winning band pushing their sound into a tougher, more guitar-led territory while holding tight to the funk and soul influences that have shaped their rise over the past decade.

Written and produced by the band and mixed and mastered by Dave Pemberton, ‘State of Mind’ pairs pounding drums, thick basslines and flashes of Madchester-inspired swagger, while its lyrics lean into themes of resilience and personal change. There is a rougher edge to the production this time around, but the groove still sits firmly at the focus of the track.

Frontman Liam Croker brings a restless energy to the vocals, balanced by Christy Bellis’ smooth harmonies that lift the chorus without overpowering it. The track moves between tension and release with ease, pairing introspective songwriting with a beat built for movement rather than melancholy.

Lyrically, the single explores mental and emotional change, confronting the discomfort of losing control while learning to embrace growth. “The song is about mind over matter and not letting things get to you too much mentally,” the band said in a statement.

The release follows WINACHI’s 2023 debut album Sympathy for the Future and arrives ahead of a busy summer that includes a headline slot at Warrington Music Fest and a hometown support show with Starsailor in July.
