Kerala Star award-winning trans actress Negha Shahin co-founded trans and queer-led arts nonprofit organisation Queer Casting alongside Rizwan Bharathi to offer an inclusive and empowering space for queer and trans artists to not simply be seen but shine for their talents.
The idea for Queer Casting, which equips queer and trans artists with training and skills across creative mediums like acting and writing, was driven by inspiration and frustration in equal parts.
“The vision is that queer and trans people shouldn’t just be seen, we should be the ones creating, performing and casting for ourselves.” – Negha Shahin, actress
As the first Indian trans actress in history to win a Kerala State Award for her role in 2021 movie Antharam, Negha quickly realised that proof of talent alone was not enough to eradicate stereotyping of transgender artists in the industry.
This lack of well-deserved opportunities is the seed from which Queer Casting blossomed.
Created with passion and care as a space rooted in inclusivity, visibility and opportunity, the initiative empowers the dreams of trans and queer artists allowing them to lead their lives with pride and dignity.
As part of our debut digital issue ‘First Light’ we spoke to Negha about Queer Casting’s various events/initiatives, what needs to change in terms of queer and trans representation onscreen and more.
