London based pop music riser Niki Kini taps into duality on summery debut EP Sugar & Spice, a five-track collection spanning R&B, disco and funk underpinned by a signature pop flair.
From the anthemic, groovy notes of “All Things Nice,” rooted in her sultry vocals and confident delivery to the guitar-led boldness of “Done Me Wrong,” to catchy rhythms of relatable offering “God’s Hitlist,” the EP addresses common misconceptions of being labelled too kind, too polite, too sweet.
With each track leaning into a slightly different energy spanning sweetness and spice to comedy and relatable, Niki intertwines touches of vulnerability with empowerment like in lead single “Murder You,” which reflects on the physical effects that love and heartache can have on a person.
An uplifting collection that’s all about taking back power from the labels imposed upon us, the EP is framed by equal amounts of honeyed sweetness and sharp ferocity.
Inspired by Niki’s carefree motto ‘It’s not that deep’ , the EP urges us to let go of things we can’t control and instead focusing on how we decide to react to them.
Speaking of the EP, Niki says, “I have had the honour of bringing parts of my life that I’ve often suppressed to life and to the limelight. I’m definitely someone who’s very polite and sweet and kind and there have been times in all sorts of relationships where that gets mistaken for naivety. This EP comes from a place of taking back my power.“
With shimmery sonics, textured vocals, thoughtful lyrics and an incredibly catchy vibe, Sugar & Spice is an exploration of personal experiences wrapped up in addictive party anthem sensibilities.
To celebrate the EP release, Niki is also hosting an EP launch party on 9th May at The Courtyard, Hoxton, anticipated to be an immersive experience with guests purchasing either a sweet or spicy ticket, which determines the vibe of their evening.
In addition to Niki’s live performance, there will also be DIY gold bracelet making, room scents that change depending on which song is being performed, pick n mix, a live DJ, Sugar & Spice themed cocktails and a photobooth with custom props.
Niki is also headlining the Ellevate stage at The Great Escape in Brighton on 15th May and performing at Harborough Festival, 6th June, Leicester.
