Maria Ellis sets the tone for 2026 with new pop single "Relapse"

New York-based pop artist Maria Ellis is venturing into a defining phase of her career with the release of her latest single “Relapse.”

The track marks the beginning of an ambitious, story-led rollout planned across 2026, positioning Ellis firmly within a new wave of independent pop voices prioritising narrative as much as sound.

Built on a sleek blend of pop and R&B, “Relapse” examines the familiar but complex cycle of returning to a relationship that no longer serves you.

Ellis leans into that emotional contradiction with clarity and restraint, allowing the tension between self-awareness and impulse to drive the song forward. The result is a track that feels both controlled and quietly unraveling, anchored by a minimalist production style that keeps the focus on melody and feeling.

The single arrives on the heels of her 2025 release “I Like Me (When I’m Loving You)” , which earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s “Songs You Need To Know” list, signalling early industry recognition. It also builds on the momentum of her debut EP Ultrabaddie, which has already crossed five million streams and generated significant traction on TikTok.

Tinged with early-2000s pop and R&B influences, “Relapse” subtly channels the sonic fingerprints of Timbaland-era production while keeping the execution modern and stripped back. It serves as the opening chapter in a larger conceptual arc, with each upcoming release set to explore different stages of the same relationship

With this release, Ellis is building a narrative universe designed to unfold in real time.
