What “Fashion Is Art” theme means for the 2026 Met Gala red carpet

The Met Gala has never done subtle. But in 2026, it’s getting philosophical.

Last week, Vogue revealed that the official dress code for the 2026 Met Gala is “Fashion Is Art,” a directive that feels both obvious and provocatively open-ended. The theme mirrors the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute spring exhibition, titled “Costume Art,” and it signals a red carpet where clothing won’t just sparkle — it will speak.

Curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition explores what he calls “the centrality of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection.” In other words, garments don’t exist in isolation. They live in conversation with paintings, sculptures, artifacts and five millennia of visual culture. Bolton has emphasized that fashion connects every curatorial department in the museum, shaping how we understand even the nude form through cultural context.

The show will feature more than 400 objects, pairing pieces from the Costume Institute’s collection with works that span 5,000 years of art history. It will debut in the museum’s new Condé M. Nast Galleries, a nearly 12,000-square-foot permanent space near the Great Hall, and open to the public on May 10, 2026, running through January 2027.

But before the exhibition welcomes museumgoers, the steps of the Met will host fashion’s most scrutinized night on May 4, 2026.

Leading the evening as co-chairs are Beyoncé, marking her first Met Gala appearance in a decade, alongside Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour. Honorary co-chairs include Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos.

The Gala Host Committee brings a distinctly pop-forward edge this year. Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, LISA, Sam Smith and Teyana Taylor are all set to serve on the committee after attending last year’s event.

The official guest list remains sealed, but speculation already swirls on the internet. Cardi B has turned the Met steps into her personal runway since her 2018 debut. Rihanna famously revealed her third pregnancy at last year’s gala. And with a break in his Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour, Bad Bunny could very well return to the carpet he has owned in recent years.

“Fashion Is Art” gives attendees rare freedom, so expect everything from sculptural silhouettes and archival references to looks that blur the line between garment and gallery piece. This year, the Met Gala steps will showcase more than fashion, staging bold arguments and living canvases in motion.
