Why is Meta down? Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp hit by global outage

Millions of users across the globe experienced disruptions on Meta’s platforms on Friday as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp were hit by a widespread outage.

According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, reports surged across multiple countries, including India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and the Philippines, with users reporting login failures, app crashes, feed-loading issues and messaging disruptions.

Is Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp down?

Yes. Thousands of users reported problems accessing Meta’s services throughout the outage.

Facebook and Instagram received the highest number of complaints, with many users unable to log in, refresh feeds or access core features. Messenger users also reported significant disruptions, while WhatsApp appeared to be less severely affected compared to Meta’s other platforms.

Some Facebook users were unexpectedly logged out of their accounts and encountered “Unexpected Error” or “Session Expired” messages when attempting to sign back in. Instagram users reported frozen feeds, black loading screens and app crashes.

What caused the Meta outage?

The exact cause of the outage remains unknown. Meta has not provided details about what triggered the disruption. There is currently no evidence suggesting a cyberattack or security breach.

The company also does not operate a public consumer-facing status page, making it difficult to independently verify the full scope of the incident.

Has Meta responded?

Yes. Meta has acknowledged the outage and said services are gradually being restored. Andy Stone from Meta’s communications team shared an update on X, stating: “We’re coming back, though it may take a bit of time for everything to be fully back to normal.”

The statement suggests recovery efforts are underway, although some users continue to report issues across Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.

When will Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp be back?

There is currently no confirmed timeline for a full restoration of Meta’s services. While outage reports have started to decline, indicating that some systems may be recovering, Meta has not announced when all platforms will be fully operational again.

Users experiencing issues are advised to wait rather than repeatedly resetting passwords or attempting account recovery until service stability is restored.
