The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its Class of 2026 nominees, and this year’s ballot feels less like a predictable roll call and more like a real snapshot of how music has actually sounded and mattered over the past few decades.
Among the first-time nominees: Luther Vandross, Shakira, Lauryn Hill, Phil Collins and the late Jeff Buckley. They’re joined by Melissa Etheridge, INXS, New Edition, P!nk and Wu-Tang Clan — all receiving their first nod. Returning to the ballot are Mariah Carey, Iron Maiden, Oasis, Sade, Billy Idol, The Black Crowes and Joy Division/New Order.
If the Hall once leaned heavily on classic-rock orthodoxy, this list makes a different argument. It places hip-hop visionaries next to metal lifers, Latin pop royalty beside post-punk architects. Chairman John Sykes called it “a diverse list of talented nominees” that reflects the “ever-evolving faces and sounds of rock and roll and its continued impact on youth culture.” And for once, that doesn’t read like PR filler, it tracks.
The timing also adds intrigue. Vandross’ nomination arrives just weeks after Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s Grammy-winning “Luther” reintroduced his velvet legacy to a new generation. While Oasis land on the ballot amid reunion-tour frenzy, Wu-Tang Clan’s nod follows what the group has described as a farewell run. And Collins, already inducted with Genesis in 2010, now gets recognition for a solo catalog that shaped ‘80s and ‘90s pop radio.
Artists become eligible 25 years after their first commercial release. More than 1,200 musicians, historians and industry insiders will cast votes. The Class of 2026 will be revealed in April, with the ceremony set for fall.
