‘Tell Me Lies’ ends with Season 3 finale, but Meaghan Oppenheimer isn’t done with that world yet

Just hours before the Season 3 finale hit Hulu, Tell Me Lies creator Meaghan Oppenheimer pulled the rug out from under fans — again.

The toxic college romance that fueled three seasons of obsession officially ended here. But Oppenheimer has made one thing clear that she’s not necessarily closing the door on this universe.

In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Oppenheimer admitted her mind naturally leans toward chaos. “My brain just works in a really twisty, worst-case-scenario way. I’m not well. I’m just not well,” she quipped, explaining how she crafts the show’s sharp turns without tipping into melodrama.

For three seasons, she and her writers balanced dual timelines — from mid-2000s college hallways to a tension-soaked 2015 wedding, while keeping audiences guessing.

Then came the confirmation. In an Instagram post shared the night before the finale (Feb 17), Oppenheimer wrote, “After three amazing seasons of Tell Me Lies, tonight’s episode will be the series finale.” She stressed that this ending was always intentional. “My job has always been to protect the creative quality of the show… I wanted this to be a creative decision, not a business decision.”

The announcement sent fans into a spiral online. Many didn’t realize Season 3 would serve as the final chapter until hours before the episode dropped. Viewers who spent years dissecting Lucy and Stephen’s destructive pull, and that endlessly messy friend group, weren’t ready to say goodbye.

Still, Oppenheimer isn’t ruling out a return. She confirmed there is “definitely room in the future for more stories in this world for spinoffs or things like that.” With her overall deal at 20th Television and the show’s consistent presence on Hulu’s Top 15 charts, the appetite is clearly there.

If Tell Me Lies proved anything, it’s that audiences crave emotionally raw storytelling over gimmicks. And if Oppenheimer revisits this universe, expect more betrayal, more heartbreak and zero clean hands.
