Four Indian films make Oscars 2026 Best Picture eligibility list

Indian cinema has secured a visible presence in the early stages of the Oscars 2026 race, with four Indian films appearing on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ reminder list of feature films eligible for Best Picture consideration.

The list, released ahead of nominations scheduled for January 22, places Indian storytelling within a competitive global field at the 98th Academy Awards. The Academy confirmed that 201 feature films currently meet the eligibility requirements for the Best Picture category, drawn from a larger pool of 317 titles qualified across general categories.

Among them are Kannada epic Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1, Anupam Kher’s Hindi-language directorial Tanvi The Great, the multilingual animated film Mahavatar Narsimha, and Tamil debut Tourist Family by first-time filmmaker Abishan Jeevinth. Radhika Apte-led Sister Midnight, a UK-India co-production in Hindi, has also been included on the eligibility list.

It’s worthy to note that the reminder list does not function as a shortlist and does not guarantee nominations. Instead, it confirms that these films have satisfied the Academy’s strict theatrical and submission criteria, allowing them to advance into the voting process.

For Best Picture consideration, titles must meet expanded inclusion standards and complete a qualifying theatrical run across multiple major US markets within a fixed timeframe, in addition to submitting the Academy’s Representation and Inclusion Standards Entry form.

The inclusion of Kantara: Chapter 1 is particularly notable given the film’s cultural grounding in regional folklore and its commercial success in India. Its presence in the “Best Picture” eligibility pool reflects the increasing visibility of regional Indian cinema beyond language and geography.

Similarly, Mahavatar Narsimha adds to the growing representation of Indian animation on global platforms, while Tourist Family marks a rare early international spotlight for a debut Tamil filmmaker.

Parallel to the Best Picture conversation, India’s official submission for Best International Feature Film, Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, has advanced to the final shortlist of 15 films in the category. The film, inspired by a New York Times essay and backed by producers including Karan Johar and Apoorva Mehta, continues its awards-season journey independently of the Best Picture eligibility process.

All these developments point to a broader shift in how Indian films are entering the global awards ecosystem. Rather than being confined to the International Feature category, Indian productions are increasingly navigating multiple Academy pathways, from regional epics and animation to independent dramas and international co-productions.

As Oscars voting progresses toward March 15, when the winners will be announced, India’s varied presence in the eligibility phase signals both ambition and expanding global engagement across cinema, culture, and creative industries.
