French President Emmanuel Macron is set to honour two of American cinema’s most influential figures during his upcoming visit to New York City, with icons Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro receiving France’s prestigious Legion of Honour.
The ceremony is expected to take place at Villa Albertine, the French cultural institution on Fifth Avenue, during Macron’s trip around the United Nations General Assembly.
The honour comes shortly after France hosted the inaugural Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence on September 7, bringing together around 220 film industry figures from 65 countries to discuss the future of cinema. Macron opened the discussions at the summit, which focused on the challenges facing the industry and the importance of preserving film culture.
Scorsese and De Niro’s own contribution to cinema spans more than five decades. Their creative partnership began in the early 1970s and produced acclaimed films including Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino. Beyond their professional collaboration, the pair have maintained a long-standing friendship all these years.
At 83, Scorsese is also a prominent advocate for film preservation. Through The Film Foundation, founded in 1990, he has supported the restoration and protection of films at risk of being lost, while continuing to champion cinema history and theatrical film culture.
