Giselle turns a relationship reckoning into a horror story in the new music video for “Heartbeat,” a rock and trip-hop track about recognising when it is time to walk away.
The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist built the song around a simple realisation: the person treating you badly would not put up with the same behaviour if the roles were reversed. “Heartbeat” follows that moment of clarity, moving from recognising the problems in a relationship to taking back the power that comes with leaving it.
The accompanying music video, out now, expands that idea into a short horror film. A pre-Halloween release, it draws directly from Giselle’s love of werewolves, witches and the darker side of the genre, while following its central character as she takes control of her situation. Giselle directed, wrote and edited the film herself.
That darker visual setting gives “Heartbeat” a natural edge. The rock influence brings the track its heavier energy, while the trip-hop elements leave room for the tension in its subject matter. It is a song about a difficult relationship, but one that ultimately points towards doing something about it.
“I want people to be able to head bang and jam out to this song but to also gain confidence to get the hell out of any horrible relationship that they are in,” Giselle says.
