Alexandria Maillot’s “Cherry Pit” sits somewhere between nostalgia and discomfort. The latest single from the Vancouver artist’s forthcoming album Cryptomnesia turns the residue of a past relationship into a hazy, slow-burning piece of baroque alt-pop.
Built on lush synths and a hypnotic groove, the track gives Maillot plenty of room to let the tension linger. Their gritted, expressive vocals carry the song through memories that feel comforting in one moment and painful in the next. The production follows suit, pulling from dream pop, indietronica, psychedelia and alternative R&B without settling neatly into any one of them.
The title offers a fitting image for what Maillot is exploring. A cherry pit is what remains after the sweetness is gone, and “Cherry Pit” treats memory in much the same way. Some experiences stay lodged in us even after we’ve moved on, carrying pieces of love, grief and vulnerability with them. Maillot doesn’t try to resolve that contradiction. Instead, the song lets those feelings coexist.
“I hope people find something of themselves in ‘Cherry Pit,’” Maillot says. “We all have memories or experiences that stay with us long after we’ve moved on, and I wanted to write about that feeling without trying to neatly resolve it… More than anything, I hope people can get lost in the song and leave feeling a little more connected to themselves.”
That openness gives the track its pull. Vancouver-based Maillot has built a reputation around emotionally detailed songwriting, earning support from media tastemakers and a Western Canadian Music Award nomination along the way.
“Cherry Pit” offers another look at what Cryptomnesia has in store, with Maillot turning something deeply personal into music that leaves plenty of space for the listener to bring their own memories to it.
