International Yoga Day is celebrated globally every year on June 21. Proposed by India, the awareness day was established by the UN in 2014, with the aim of raising worldwide awareness about the various physical and mental benefits of practicing yoga.
Celebrating the practice of yoga as a holistic approach towards overall wellbeing, the day also promotes universal harmony, peace and a sense of community.
To mark International Yoga Day, we asked regular yoga practitioners for tips on how beginners should get started in their practice. Here’s what they had to say.
Keerthi Veeraraghavan, Yoga teacher & founder of Sthiram and Sukham Yoga, says “Start small, stay consistent, and let go of the idea that yoga is about achieving perfect poses. Many people feel they need to be flexible, fit, or experienced before they begin practicing yoga. In reality, yoga meets you exactly where you are. You don’t need an hour-long practice or advanced postures to experience its benefits. Even 10-15 minutes of mindful movement, breathing, or quiet observation each day can be a meaningful beginning.”
Lokeshwar Ravinchandran, a certified yoga trainer further reminds, “Focus first on gentle stretching, basic postures, and mindful breathing rather than trying advanced poses. Find a qualified teacher if possible to guide you.”
Diana Jadduroy, who is a licensed master social worker (LMSW) offers a much-needed reminder, “Take things slowly and be patient with yourself. Some days you may be able to master poses, while other days may feel more challenging, ” adding, “Progress in yoga, as in life, is not always linear. Be kind to yourself and curious throughout the process. You may be surprised by what you discover, both on and off the mat!”
Artist Visalachi, who has earned 48 awards and recognitions for her past work in yoga says, “Don’t worry about being perfect. Just work on consistency and building a strong foundation. And most importantly enjoy the journey!”
Akshita Jain, a regular yoga practitioner offers a piece of motivation, saying, “My advice to anyone who wants to start yoga will be just do it before overthinking it. Do it for just one week… and in that one week if you start feeling energetic, good about beings around and yourself that is the sign to NOT STOP AND ONLY ELEVATE!”
So what are you waiting for? International Yoga Day, take the first step and start your yoga journey with advice that’s exactly right for you!
