Spring is often synonymous with the vibrance of blooming flowers that transforms landscapes into a portrait of vitality and renewal.
When we think of blossoming flowers, our minds typically think of Japan’s stunning cherry blossom season. But in an unassuming, cozy corner of India, an equally picturesque scene unfolds in the form of Ladakh’s Apricot Blossom Festival.
Also known as Chuli Mendok, the blossom season usually occurs from late March, peaking in mid-April, transforming the rocky terrains of the Aryan Valley and Kargil region into a stunning scenery of pink and white blooms.

Coming to life as an annual celebration of local culture laden with traditional music, dance and food, the festival offers up an authentic experience of springtime in the Himalayas.
The festival which peaked between April 8-16 this year, was as vivid and tranquil as it is every year.
Mehul, who experienced the festival this year says, “Visiting Ladakh during the Apricot Blossom Festival was honestly one of the most peaceful travel experiences I’ve had. The villages looked surreal with all the pink and white blossoms, and everything felt so calm and untouched. What made it special was how naturally the culture and daily life blended with the celebration—it didn’t feel like a touristy event, but something very local and genuine.”
As most of the world rushes off to more popular spots for spring blossoms like Japan or Netherlands, Aishwarya, founder of travel company Meher Holidays, reminds us of why Ladakh is a hidden gem worth visiting for a springtime break.

She says, “I organised a group trip specially for the apricot blossom season, and we attended the Tyakshi village festival. It was an incredible experience – right from the local food and cultural performances to the warmth of the people and their enthusiasm, everything felt so authentic and refreshing. I would definitely love to attend more such festivals in the future and continue organising group trips around them as well.”

A refreshing, underrated travel and cultural experience for those looking to make the most of the fleeting spring season in India, Ladakh’s Apricot Blossom Festival is worth adding to your bucket list.
