American singer-songwriter Gary Marks has released his latest single, “The Elemental Line,” offering a poignant preview of his forthcoming LP Crossroads, arriving April 18 via Lantern Heights Records.
The track lands as the third single from the project and arrives just a day before the album’s official release, positioning itself as a defining moment in a record that spans nearly five decades of songwriting.
Marks, a cult figure rooted in the 1970s jazz-rock circuit, has built a legacy outside conventional industry structures. He’s been writing continuously while largely sidestepping touring and mainstream promotion. Crossroads consolidates that journey into a single body of work, presenting songs written from 1976 through the 2020s in chronological sequence.
“The Elemental Line” captures Marks at his most introspective yet expansive. Built on textured guitar lines and fluid melodic progression, the track unfolds with a quiet intensity, carrying lyrics that navigate displacement, longing and the search for belonging. It feels both grounded and unmoored, like standing at the edge of something vast and uncertain.
The song carries a clear emotional depth. Rather than aiming for grandeur, Marks allows the arrangement to unfold naturally, giving the music space to breathe and resonate. The result is a subtle yet compelling track that lingers long after it ends.
Crossroads has also been selected as an official Record Store Day UK/Europe release. As the album prepares to arrive, “The Elemental Line” stands as a compelling entry point into a catalogue that has evolved in isolation yet speaks directly to the present moment.
