Hollywood and the world are mourning the loss of Chuck Norris, the legendary martial artist and actor whose iconic career spanned decades in film and television. Norris passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the age of 86, his family confirmed in an Instagram post the following day. No cause of death was disclosed.
In a heartfelt statement, his family described his passing as sudden and peaceful, sharing that he was surrounded by loved ones in his final moments. “It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris,” the statement read. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”
Born Carlos Ray Norris in 1940 in Oklahoma, Norris first captured global attention as the villain Colt in Bruce Lee’s 1972 martial arts classic The Way of the Dragon. That breakout performance launched a storied Hollywood career, which included memorable roles in Missing in Action, Invasion U.S.A., Code of Silence, and the long-running television series Walker, Texas Ranger.
Norris’ last major film role came in 2012’s The Expendables 2, where he starred alongside fellow action icons Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Dolph Lundgren.
Stallone, reflecting on their collaboration, called Norris “all-American in every way” and extended his condolences to the family. “I had a great time working with Chuck,” Stallone wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of the two men.
Van Damme, Norris’ longtime friend and Expendables 2 co-star, shared heartfelt memories of their decades-long friendship. “Deepest condolences on the passing of my friend, Chuck Norris,” Van Damme wrote.
“We knew each other from my early days, and I always respected the man he was. He will never be forgotten.”
Dolph Lundgren described Norris as “the champ” and praised him as a role model for young martial artists entering Hollywood. “Someone who had the respect, humility and strength it takes to be a man. We will miss you, my friend,” Lundgren posted.
Fellow Expendables 2 co-star Terry Crews called working with Norris “one of the greatest privileges of my life,” highlighting his humility and kindness despite his larger-than-life reputation.
Tributes poured in from those who worked with Norris on Walker, Texas Ranger as well. Actress Nia Peeples recalled Norris as a “genuinely good human being” who ensured fairness on set and gave opportunities to others.
Judson Mills, who played Francis Gage, described Norris as “like a second father” and “a giant among men who somehow always made you feel completely at ease.”
Norris’ influence extended beyond Hollywood.
Singer and actor Donny Osmond remembered training with Norris in Tang Soo Do, describing him as “tough in training, but one of the kindest souls you could ever know.”
Celebrity chef Guy Fieri called him “my all-time favorite,” while Joe Piscopo, Norris’ Sidekicks co-star, described working with him as “life-changing and treasured.”
Political figures also expressed their grief. US President Donald Trump called Norris “a great guy” and “a really good, tough cookie,” during a press statement, while Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the Lone Star State “has lost a legend,” praising Norris’ patriotism, martial arts prowess, and influence.
Senator Ted Cruz highlighted Norris’ faith and fighting spirit, and U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee recounted Norris’ support during his presidential campaign, noting his “humble and kind” nature and unwavering commitment to faith and family.
Chuck Norris’ family described his passing as “sudden” but peaceful, surrounded by loved ones. They wrote:
“To the world he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family,” the family wrote. “Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.”
Norris, who enjoyed renewed fame from the viral “Chuck Norris facts” internet memes of the mid-2000s, was also known for his strong Christian faith and conservative values.
He is survived by his wife Gena O’Kelley, five children, and 13 grandchildren.
