Padma Awards 2026: Mammootty, Dharmendra, Alka Yagnik and R Madhavan among recipients

The Padma Awards 2026, announced on the eve of Republic Day, have put a strong spotlight on Indian cinema and music, with several of the industry’s most enduring names receiving the country’s civilian honours.

Veteran actor Dharmendra will be conferred the Padma Vibhushan posthumously, while Mammootty and Alka Yagnik have been named Padma Bhushan awardees. Actor R Madhavan features among this year’s Padma Shri recipients.

Dharmendra’s Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, marks a career that shaped popular Hindi cinema for decades. From romantic leads in the 1960s to socially rooted dramas and later reinventions, his screen presence bridged generations and defined an era of mainstream storytelling. The posthumous recognition places him among a rare group of film personalities acknowledged at the highest level for lifetime contribution.

Mammootty’s Padma Bhushan further affirms his stature as one of Indian cinema’s most respected actors. With work spanning Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and international films, his career is defined by range, longevity and an ability to balance commercial success with artistic risk.

Alka Yagnik’s Padma Bhushan acknowledges her lasting influence on Indian playback singing. Her voice became central to Hindi film music through the 1990s and early 2000s, shaping the emotional core of countless films and a generation of listeners.

R Madhavan’s inclusion in the Padma Shri list reflects his steady presence across Hindi and South Indian cinema, alongside recent performances that blend mainstream appeal with character-driven choices. He is joined by actors Prosenjit Chatterjee and the late actor and comedian Satish Shah, underlining a year where the arts have a strong footprint across the honours list.

Beyond film and music, this year’s honors also extend to prominent figures from sports and creative industries. Tennis icon Vijay Amritraj has been named a Padma Bhushan awardee, while Indian cricket stars Harmanpreet Kaur and Rohit Sharma have received the Padma Shri, along with Indian women’s hockey goalkeeper Savita Punia.

The Padma Bhushan list also includes veteran ad-guru Piyush Pandey, whose work has left a lasting imprint on Indian popular culture through decades of iconic campaigns. Together, these names highlight the Padma Awards’ wider engagement with cultural influence beyond traditional artistic spaces, spanning sports, storytelling, and mass communication.

In all, 131 Padma Awards have been approved for 2026, including five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri honours. Sixteen awards have been conferred posthumously. The list features 19 women and six foreign nationals, NRIs, PIOs and OCIs. The honours will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan later this year.

While the list spans public service, sports and academia, the recognition of film and music figures once again highlights how deeply popular culture is woven into India’s national story, not just as entertainment, but as shared memory and cultural record.
