Louis Tomlinson drops new single 'Imposter' ahead of album release

Louis Tomlinson has released his new single, ‘Imposter‘, offering a revealing glimpse into his much-awaited upcoming third studio album, How Did I Get Here?, due out this Friday, January 23.

The track arrived this Tuesday alongside stark visuals that frame the album’s reflective tone. Almost instantly, fans took to social media, responding to the song’s vulnerability and lyrical weight with unfiltered intensity.

Written during a trip to Costa Rica, ‘Imposter’ confronts identity, self doubt, and the quiet pressure that lingers behind success. Louis Tomlinson has described it as the most melodic moment on the album, adding that the song leans directly into feelings of imposter syndrome that he still navigates.

Co-written with Nico Rebscher and Dave Gibson, Tomlinson shapes a confession that feels intimate rather than performative. “I can’t get this feeling out my head, that I am the imposter. I don’t really know who I am anymore,” he sings, cutting straight to the core of the track’s unease.

Speaking on BBC Radio 1, he explained that his interest in psychology influenced the writing, framing those feelings through the lens of a new relationship rather than fame alone.

“Well, I’m a bit of a bit of a psychology nerd. I find all that really really interesting and Imposter Syndrome definitely something that I feel like I’ve. Had or maybe even continue to have doing this job. So it’s kind of just the idea of that dressed up in the context of being like a new relationship. But yeah, I’m kind of interested in.”

Ahead of the release, Tomlinson teased fans on X, calling it a “big day” and saying the song “sets the tone for the entire record”. After it dropped, he returned to thank fans for their continued support, asking for their help giving the album “the moment it deserves,” and later credited their belief for shaping the record’s confidence.

The accompanying music video stars actor James Nelson Joyce, whom Louis Tomlinson [seemingly] personally cast after playing alongside him at Soccer Aid last year. Fans quickly praised the track’s emotional honesty, with many calling it “a lyrical masterpiece” that left their feelings “all over the place,” and one of his most affecting releases to date.

With How Did I Get Here?, Tomlinson continues to refine his voice as a solo artist, choosing clarity and honesty over spectacle, and inviting listeners deeper into his inner world.
