Bijou Belle is back with “See You,” a mid-tempo alt-pop track about the difficult point in a relationship when one person has already moved on and the other is still hoping for another chance.
The 17-year-old South Dakota artist keeps the song focused on that imbalance. She sings from the perspective of someone looking at a former relationship and wondering whether the person on the other side ever saw it the same way. The repeated question through the lyric, “can you see me the way that I see you,” gets to the heart of the song without dressing the feeling up.
There is desperation in “See You,” but Belle leaves room for hope, too. Rather than treating heartbreak as a clean break, she captures the less tidy reality of still caring when the other person has started moving forward.
“‘See You’ is about loving someone who’s already moving on, while part of you is still holding onto everything you had,” Belle says. “It’s that feeling of wanting someone to see you the way you see them.”
The release follows Belle’s appearance on the latest season of NBC’s The Voice, where she competed on Team Adam. She followed her run on the show with a cover of Billie Eilish’s “Wildflower,” which she performed during the competition, as well as her original song “Close the Door.”
Belle had already begun building her musical identity with her family band, The RathCo, before appearing on television. The group released its self-titled debut EP shortly before her The Voice appearance, while Belle now continues developing her own alt-pop sound as a solo artist.
