‘Zootopia 2’ hits $1 Billion worldwide in record time

Disney’s Zootopia 2 has officially crossed $1 billion at the global box office, reaching the milestone just 17 days after release and becoming the fastest PG-rated film in history to do so. The animated sequel cleared the mark on Friday, capping off a dominating theatrical run that has turned it into one of 2025’s defining box office stories.

By Thursday, Zootopia 2 had amassed $986.1 million worldwide, driven by $232.7 million in North America and a massive $753.4 million from international markets. The final push carried the film past the billion-dollar threshold a day later, placing it among a rare group of titles to achieve the feat this year.

Zootopia 2 is only the third film of 2025 to surpass $1 billion globally, following Disney’s Lilo & Stitch ($1.03 billion) and China’s animated phenomenon Ne Zha 2, which currently leads the year with $1.9 billion. In animation history, the milestone remains exclusive. Just 13 animated films have ever crossed $1 billion worldwide, ten of them released by Disney.

The sequel’s performance also marks a significant win for Walt Disney Animation Studios. It becomes the studio’s first back-to-back billion-dollar release after Moana 2 and Disney’s fifth $1 billion global hit in the past 18 months.

Released ahead of Thanksgiving, Zootopia 2 opened to $158 million domestically and $559 million worldwide over its five-day holiday debut. Those figures delivered the largest global opening ever for an animated film and ranked as the fourth-biggest worldwide debut in box office history, behind Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

China has played a decisive role in the film’s global success. The sequel has grossed more than $430 million in the market, making it the second-highest-grossing non-local release in the country’s history, behind Avengers: Endgame. The franchise’s popularity has surged there in recent years, bolstered by the opening of Zootopia Land at Shanghai Disneyland.

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Zootopia 2 reunites Ginnifer Goodwin’s Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman’s Nick Wilde as they investigate a new mystery involving a reptilian arrival voiced by Ke Huy Quan. Strong reviews, sustained word of mouth, and pent-up demand for family-friendly theatrical releases have helped propel the film’s rapid climb.
