Madison Beer finds freedom after heartbreak in cinematic “Bittersweet” visual

Madison Beer walks away from a breakup scene in her “Bittersweet” music video surrounded by a parade.

Pop star Madison Beer channels the raw complexity of love lost in her cinematic new music video for “Bittersweet,” released October 21. The emotionally charged visual, co-directed by Beer and Iris Kim, captures the tension between heartbreak and healing — offering both a tear-streaked farewell and a jubilant celebration of independence.

The music video opens on a quiet suburban street, where Beer’s character faces the abrupt end of a relationship with her on-screen partner, portrayed by The Summer I Turned Pretty actor Sean Kaufman.

“We’re done,” he tells her at his doorstep; a stark moment that sets the tone for the emotional unraveling that follows. But instead of leaning into melancholy, Madison Beer flips the narrative. As she walks away from the breakup, she’s met by a full marching band, confetti, and a cheering crowd holding signs that read “It’ll be okay!” The parade — both surreal and triumphant — mirrors the song’s central message: grief and liberation often coexist.

“‘Bittersweet’ is about the end of a chapter and the difficulty of coming to terms with it, while also recognizing that deep down you know it’s for the best — and finding peace in that along the journey,” Beer explained. The lyricism echoes that sentiment — “Now that it’s over, you blame it all on me… I know I should be bitter, but baby, right now I’m bittersweet” — capturing that tender space between resentment and release.

Visually, the music video doubles as an emotional short film, blending realism with stylized flair. Beer’s performance oscillates between fragility and defiance, underscoring her evolving artistry since her 2023 LP Silence Between Songs. The inclusion of Kaufman adds cinematic gravity, while Beer’s creative direction reinforces her control over her narrative, both as an artist and storyteller.

“Bittersweet” follows her September single “Yes, Baby,” marking the second in a string of new releases that hint at the start of her next album era. Earlier this year, her dance-pop track “Make You Mine” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Pop Recording, establishing Beer’s momentum heading into this new creative chapter.

The singer, 26, also performed “Bittersweet” live at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in New York on October 15 — a sleek, emotionally layered performance that will stream on Prime Video and globally across Victoria’s Secret’s social platforms.

Beyond the screen, Beer’s personal life has been drawing headlines as well. Her relationship with Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been the subject of recent public fascination, especially after the couple were spotted sharing a candid sideline moment at a recent NFL game. Still, Beer keeps the focus on her work — using her music to navigate heartbreak with grace and vulnerability.

With “Bittersweet,” Madison Beer delivers more than a breakup anthem; she crafts an honest portrait of emotional duality, one that feels both intimate and universally relatable.

The video’s final moments, with confetti falling around her, feel like a quiet victory lap — messy, emotional, and real. Heartbreak might have ended the story, but for Beer, it clearly marks the start of something new.
