“Adolescence” star Owen Cooper becomes Emmys’ youngest supporting actor nominee

15-year-old Owen Cooper in a tense scene from Netflix’s Adolescence

Fifteen-year-old Owen Cooper has made history as the youngest actor ever nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.

His nomination comes on the back of his acclaimed performance in Netflix’s breakout British crime drama “Adolescence”, where he plays Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy arrested for the murder of a schoolmate. The series has captured global attention since its release in March 2025.

Cooper’s nod breaks a 52-year record previously held by Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when nominated in 1972 for “That Certain Summer”. If Cooper wins, he would become the youngest male winner of any acting Emmy to date.

Remarkably, “Adolescence” marks Cooper’s first acting role—he had no prior experience before being cast by director Philip Barantini, and his raw, gripping portrayal has drawn praise from both critics and peers, with co-star Stephen Graham likening him to a young Robert De Niro.

The Netflix series, released in March 2025, has received 13 Emmy nominations, matching top contenders such as “The Bear” and “The Pitt”. Its success has been bolstered by its powerful themes around gender-based violence and adolescent masculinity, sparking widespread conversations worldwide.

Cooper faces tough competition, including castmate Ashley Walters, Javier Bardem, Rob Delaney, Peter Sarsgaard, and Bill Camp. Final voting runs August 18–27, with the winners to be announced during the live broadcast on September 14 on CBS and Paramount+.
