Crunchyroll To Honor “Attack on Titan” with First-Ever Global Impact Award

One of the most influential anime series of the modern era is about to receive a historic honor. “Attack on Titan”, the globally acclaimed adaptation of Hajime Isayama’s best-selling manga, will become the first recipient of the Global Impact Award at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, recognizing its unparalleled contribution to anime culture and storytelling on a global scale.

The prestigious new award, introduced this year by Crunchyroll, is designed to spotlight “visionary creators and groundbreaking works that have left an indelible mark on culture, history, and the hearts of audiences around the world,” and few series fit that description more aptly than Hajime Isayama’s dark, dystopian epic.

With over 140 million manga volumes sold, near-universal critical acclaim, and a decade-spanning anime run that concluded with the cinematic finale “Attack on Titan: The Last Attack” in 2024, the franchise’s legacy is as undeniable as it is monumental. “The Crunchyroll Anime Awards is our yearly celebration of the creative community in Japan and the actors around the world who are powering the global love of anime,” said Gita Rebbapragada, Chief Operating Officer at Crunchyroll.

“This year, we’re proud to introduce the new Global Impact Award. We recently commissioned a study with National Research Group that explores just how important anime is to fans, especially Gen Z. For example, nearly 40% of teen anime fans consider anime a meaningful part of who they are, and 30% say it has influenced their outlook on life. The Global Impact Award will honor the series and films leaving a mark on culture and global fans alike.”

Crunchyroll added that the Global Impact Award may be presented annually to honor visionary, emotionally resonant works, and the creatives behind them, that challenge convention and redefine what anime can say and do across languages, generations, and borders.

Produced by acclaimed studio MAPPA and published by Kodansha, “Attack on Titan” gained global attention for its haunting themes, complex characters, and high-stakes narrative. According to Crunchyroll, three of the anime’s seasons scored a 100% critic score and over 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. A representative from MAPPA will accept the Global Impact Award on behalf of the entire team during the live ceremony in Tokyo on May 25.

The 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards will premiere on Sunday, May 25, beginning with a pre-show at 5 p.m. JST, followed by the main ceremony at 6 p.m. JST. The event will be livestreamed globally via Crunchyroll’s YouTube and Twitch channels, as well as Sony Pictures Core and Sony Group’s global and Japan YouTube platforms, available in nine languages.
