One year after the release of their critically acclaimed album Frog In Boiling Water, which solidified DIIV’s place as modern shoegaze mainstays, the Brooklyn quartet returns with a new track, “Return of Youth” — arguably their most devastatingly intimate release yet.
Written on the cusp of fatherhood but released after a life-altering rupture, “Return of Youth” lands with a raw emotional charge that’s impossible to ignore. What began as a hopeful meditation on stepping into parenthood, what frontman Zachary Cole Smith calls “a projection, zooming in until the larger existential dilemmas were out of frame”, has since taken on deeper, more somber undertones. The result is more than just a single; it’s a quiet, unflinching reckoning with loss, memory, and the fragile beauty of beginning again.
“Where Fender On The Freeway found peace in the patterns of a gigantic macro, this one finds it in a mundane and simple micro,” he reflects. “I imagined seeing myself through the eyes of my child, a rebirth of sorts, laced with fear and insecurity, discovering beauty and serenity together in the simplest places.”
But that imagined peace didn’t last. Just as Smith and his partner were preparing for the birth of their second child, the California wildfires turned their reality to ash. “At the very beginning of the year my family and I lost our home and everything we owned to the wildfires in Altadena, CA,” Smith shares. “We had been preparing for the birth of our second son. We were living in the beautiful world at home that I had imagined in this song, and at once that world was gone.”
However, that loss didn’t erase the meaning behind “Return of Youth”, it reframed it. “When we re-approached this song to finally release it, I couldn’t help but hear it differently in the aftermath,” he reflects. “What makes a home? Can you ever escape the outside world? Is hope just a delusion? Is anyone actually prepared to be a parent? How CAN you bring a child into this world?”
The questions are weighty, but Smith doesn’t pretend to have the answers. “I found again the big questions were irrelevant. You just keep on living I guess. Life happens on life’s terms.” There’s no neat resolution here, just the sound of a band still walking through fire, trying to find moments of clarity and quiet amid the chaos.
The accompanying music video for “Return of Youth” captures the scorched remnants of what once was home, amplifying the emotional resonance of the song’s gentle melody and delicate layering. It plays like a visual elegy, but also a testament to endurance, rebuilding, and, perhaps most of all, to parenthood as both hope and confrontation. It’s the sound of someone trying to make peace with a world that keeps cracking at the edges.
“Anyway, make of the song and the video whatever you want,” Smith concludes. “It’s just a snapshot, albeit a more personal one this time. Enjoy.”
This track marks a full-circle moment as DIIV prepare to return to the road with a renewed perspective. The band recently announced an extensive EU/UK headline tour kicking off this August, including appearances at major festivals such as End Of The Road and Paredes de Coura. But before that, they’ll play three special shows at Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom this month, performing Frog In Boiling Water in full.
