London Records is set to release Forbidden Fruit: The Age of Consent Remixes on July 11, a genre-spanning new project that revisits and reinterprets Bronski Beat’s influential 1984 debut. The remix album marks the culmination of the band’s 40th anniversary celebrations and arrives on crystal clear vinyl, CD, and digital formats.
Best known for their groundbreaking single Smalltown Boy, Bronski Beat emerged as a defining force in 1980s synth-pop, blending political urgency with club-ready energy. Forbidden Fruit brings that legacy into the present with reworks from leading names in electronic music, including Superchumbo, Gareth Jones, Kinky Roland, The Knocks, and more.

Opening the record is a previously unreleased Superchumbo extended mix of “Why?” featuring Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys, followed by a newly extended version of “Smalltown Boy” featuring Perfume Genius, co-produced by Bronski Beat and The Knocks. Both tracks showcase how the originals still resonate — now recast with modern production aesthetics.
Elsewhere, acclaimed producer Gareth Jones delivers a dark, industrial take on Junk, while Kinky Roland offers two Italo-disco and Hi-NRG styled remixes of “Love and Money” and “Need a Man Blues”. The standout deep cut: a long-rumored, now-completed 16-minute “Ultramix” of “I Feel Love / Love to Love You Baby” featuring Marc Almond, reconstructed from archival tapes and finally unveiled in full.
The CD version adds four bonus tracks, including a rare stripped-down remix of “Screaming”, an extended rework of “No More War”, and a previously limited-edition Planningtorock remix of “Smalltown Boy”.
More than just a remix compilation, Forbidden Fruit functions as a bridge between eras, both preserving and expanding Bronski Beat’s legacy for new listeners and longtime fans alike.
