James Collector and Sloppy Joe Lessard release new single “At The Speed of Dawn”

James Collector and Sloppy Joe Lessard have joined forces on “At The Speed of Dawn,” an instrumental built around piano, violin, whistle and electronic textures.

The track marks an unexpected crossover between Collector’s electronic background and Lessard’s work with bluegrass outfit Head for the Hills, resulting in a composition that feels both intimate and expansive.

The song began with a deceptively simple exercise. Collector set out to write one chord progression every day for 16 days, and on the seventh, he found the progression that would become the track’s foundation. Its shifting harmonies give the piano an unsettled edge before Lessard’s violin enters, followed by his unmistakable whistled melody.

From there, acoustic instruments and electronic production move in and out of each other. Piano stabs and violin plucks sit against spacious synths, while the whistle gives the arrangement a lighter, almost restless quality. Rather than building toward a conventional climax, “At The Speed of Dawn” keeps expanding and contracting around its central motif.

The song’s inspiration was equally understated: morning light and the strange experience of encountering a familiar place as though it were new. Collector describes the track as an attempt to capture that brief window of attention before the routines of the day take over.

“I would be grateful if listeners rediscover their own wonder, if the music scores their morning walk, or prompts an unplanned voyage,” Collector says. Lessard takes a more immediate view of the track’s purpose, hoping it offers “a moment of pause before and/or between the long scroll of modern life.”

The pair first crossed paths through Colorado’s hip-hop scene, but their shared history takes a back seat to the music here. Recorded remotely between San Francisco and Tucson, “At The Speed of Dawn” leaves the collaboration deliberately open-ended, suggesting there may be more territory for Collector and Lessard to explore together.
