When is World Biryani Day celebrated?

World Biryani Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday of July. In 2026, the day falls on July 5th.

Why is World Biryani Day celebrated?

World Biryani Day is celebrated to mark the evergreen presence of the dish in menus and mealtimes around the world.

The idea for the celebration came from famous rice brand Daawat, who are renowned from their high quality basmati rice grains, which is often used to make Biryani. The brand came up with a specific day to unite Biryani fans worldwide.

The day was established in 2022 and the day is rooted in mutual love for Biryani.

There are no particular themes for the celebration, people are simply encouraged to cook, order and indulge in their favourite Biryani.

What is the origin of Biryani?

Biryani has a history that’s as varied and layered as its flavour profile. The origin of the dish can be traced back to the Persian delight “birinj Biryani,” which means fried rice.

The Mughals not only added meat but also added ingredients like raisings, apricots, cashews and onions to deepen the mouthwatering taste.

The dish that quickly became the heart of Mughal cuisine spread to India during their reign. The delicacy therefore gained an Indian touch as it began to be cooked with smoky spices that gave it an exotic feel that exploded with heartiness.

From India, the love for Biryani spread across other countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the middle east, with each country bringing in their unique cultural twist that further diversified the popular dish.

Happy World Biryani Day! Don’t forget to celebrate by enjoying a Biryani today.
