Oscars Academy unveils new global award for movie theaters

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is turning its attention beyond filmmakers and films with the launch of a new global honor dedicated to movie theaters.

Announced this week, the Academy Marquee Theater List will recognize 50 outstanding cinemas worldwide, celebrating venues that elevate the moviegoing experience through exceptional presentation, community impact, cultural significance and preservation of cinema history. The inaugural list is set to debut in spring 2027, coinciding with the Academy’s centennial year.

The program will select 25 theaters from the United States and 25 from international markets. A committee of Academy members representing multiple branches will oversee the selection process, with final approval from the Academy’s Board of Governors.

Unlike the Oscars, the honor is aimed at the exhibition sector, recognizing the theaters that bring audiences together and keep the theatrical tradition alive. Eligible venues must operate year-round as physical theaters and may range from independent cinemas and repertory houses to major multiplexes.

Applications are now open, with submissions evaluated across several categories, including community engagement, visual and audio presentation, programming, accessibility, historic preservation, theater design, and overall audience experience.

The initiative was proposed by filmmaker Jason Reitman and arrives at a time when many theaters continue to navigate industry shifts while reaffirming the value of communal moviegoing. Selected venues will receive official Academy certification and recognition across the organization’s digital platforms.

Applications remain open through August 25, 2026.
