South London Women Artists (SLWA) celebrates 18 years with ‘Sisterhood’ exhibit

South London Women Artists (SLWA) , a non-profit association of established and emerging women artists in South London, marks a major milestone with its currently showing Sisterhood exhibit.

Celebrating 18 years of the SLWA, the Sisterhood exhibition, taking place at the landmark building Lambeth Archives, Brixton brings 76 talented artists together to showcase their distinct style and create an empowering dialogue to align with International Women’s Day as well.

One of the exhibiting SLWA artists Carry Hornby, a Chinese calligraphy expert, says, “It is an honour to be part of this prestigious female artists group exhibition Sisterhood at the landmark building Lambeth Archives. This exhibition is driven out of the vision to jointly celebrate the 18th years of Sisterhood in art and international women’s month in 2026. The teamwork of 76 artists shines through the joyful dialogues among 76 pieces of artwork in this exhibition.”

Carry’s piece at the exhibition which SLWA describes on Instagram as “mysterious and mesmerising” reimagines the ancient artistic tradition of Chinese brushwork with contemporary touches.

Centred on the bamboo plant, Carry’s piece is a calligraphy work is completed in ink on paper with single seal. Speaking of the theme she’s focused on, she explains, “I have chosen ’Bamboo’ for its characteristics of resilience and its humbling strength for this exhibition to promise the ongoing development and steady growth of South London Women Artists Group.”

Carry also facilitated a water calligraphy workshop to take participants through the intricacy of her craft. Other workshops conducted as part of the exhibit included postcard making, mindfulness practices and sock puppet making.

With over 95 active members, the SLWA has championed local women artists spanning an enriching blend of styles, mediums, themes and experiences.

An uplifting community that has been a pillar of support for established and emerging artists alike over the past 18 years, the Sisterhood exhibit which kicked off in early March is a celebration of the incredible community of artists behind South London Women Artists (SLWA).

The Sisterhood exhibit will be showing at the iconic Lambeth Archives till March 31. Don’t miss out! On Saturday, March 28, the epic exhibition will also be holding a Closing Party at Lambeth Archives.
