Sudha Rajendran

When our eyes land upon artist Sudha Rajendran’s otherworldly yet earthy explosion of colours on canvas, what we’re see is the perfect blend of academic realism and creative experimentation coming together in abundant collision of rawness and refinement.

Born and raised in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sudha’s artistic journey began after moving to Chennai in 2010 under the guidance of her guru – and husband – a renowned artist Master Kalai Valarmani R. Rajendran.

From a Diploma in Fine Arts to Bachelors in Fine Arts in Painting from Dessin Academy (Bharathiar University, 2019 ) followed by a Master of Fine Arts from The Tamil Nadu Dr. J Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University (2025), Sudha’s work has been showcased in shows across India spanning Delhi, Kerala, Bangalore, Uttar Pradesh and more, bringing intricate visual stories to life with vibrant layers of colours and textures.

With intense passion shaped by technical knowledge as she unfolds celebration of humanity, nature and the heartfelt bond between both, Sudha’s work is often influenced by the dense greenery, gentle tides and quiet coasts she grew up around and encapsulates themes such as women, animals, flowers in vivid, hypnotic strokes.

Her current solo exhibit at Soul Spice, Mylapore, Chennai, backed by Tamil Nadu Art and Culture Department, continues to expand and evolve Sudha’s artistic engagements with her complex yet resonant approach.

Preferring the flexibility of acrylic medium, she delves into her art style, saying, “I enjoy a thick and bold application of colours backed by the knowledge of my academic background. My colours are also never directly used, its always a unique mix or blend of colours that I can’t really replicate again.”

While we might first be drawn to the carefree splash of colours, her signature rests in the delicacy and attention to detail nestled within this seeming liberation.

Speaking of her signature style she says, “You’ll notice how every figure in my painting has their forehead, nose and lips painted in the same colour. The colour palette is often drawn from nature, reflecting calming greens or cool blues. If you pay attention, you’ll also note a drip pattern in the background to represent how much I enjoyed playing with the colours; I’ve made those drips a signature of mine.”

This playful but carefully crafted signature can be spotted in some of her best works as well as her personal favourite pieces. One of her favourites – sold within the second day of creation – is a bold piece of a woman with chunky bangles. Grounded yet drenched in green, the piece titled Sensory Overload showcases Sudha’s ability to experiment with colour.

She also shares her love for her recent Radhey Krishna painting series, crediting fellow artists and art lovers for showing love and encouraging her to try different variants of the theme.

Another painting she notes for its popularity is the serene yet empowering piece titled Satisfied Mother Earth. Awarded the Senior Artist Award by the Tamil Nadu Art and Culture Department in 2025, the piece which also won awards and praise at the national level is one that brims with both panache and purpose.

Of the piece, she says, “The painting is very special to me. One, the model I’ve been inspired by is a relative. Second, I really wanted to do my bit to bring attention to the dwindling population of sparrows and wanted to do it with a bit of creativity. I didn’t expect this piece to receive so much love and it feels really good to see all the appreciation for it.”

Delivering an expansive artistic world that teeters seamlessly between realism and imagination, Sudha Rajendran‘s work gives us pause as we take in the gritty storytelling stowed away between generous paint layers, velvety strokes and uplifting themes of femininity and connection.

Larger-than-life in its creativity yet quietly held together by the principles of polished academia, Sudha Rajendran‘s solo exhibit awaits you at Soul Spice, Mylapore, Chennai.

Inaugurated on Tuesday, March 24, the exhibition will be on between 11am-7pm till Sunday, March 29.
