Canadian rock band Working Royals unfurls three decades worth of friendship on latest album Cross Country, a 11-track project that dives into long-distance friendship, family, second chances, and staying connected as life pulls you in different directions.
Inspired by the personal lifelong friendship of the band yet deeply relatable, the album sways between classic rock and Americana underscored by soaring choruses and warming guitar lines.
Living in the nostalgia of how friendships used to be while also moving forward into a space of mature, fond reconnection, the project perfectly captures the feeling of drifting apart and then back together again.
The album brims with gentle introspections and soaring sonics in equal parts – this is perfectly captured in “Here right now.” A slow number built on singalong chorus and groovy piano-led instrumentals, the track is anthemic yet grounding.
With a smooth, easy-going delivery wrapping around poetic lyrics, the track reflects on the melancholia of loneliness and the joy of companionship, a perfect juxtaposition that captures adult friendships.
While some tracks like “Time,” are underpinned by a quietness and others like “Lonely Road,” lean into the catchy guitar stylings, “Here right now,” is tender yet uplifting.
Speaking of the album, the band says : “We made Cross Country to prove to ourselves that it’s never too late to pick up the phone, book the flight, and chase the thing you’ve been talking about for years. If this album does anything, we hope it reminds people to reconnect with their old friends, honour where they’ve come from, and remember how powerful it is when real people get in a room, make some noise, and lose track of time together.”
Rooted in a live performance sonic style, the record is both timeless and modern as it weaves through yearning, comfort and everything in between.
