‘Sunrise on the Reaping’: What we know about the new Hunger Games prequel film

The return to Panem now has a date. Sunrise on the Reaping, Lionsgate’s newly announced prequel to The Hunger Games, will hit theaters on November 20, 2026, marking the franchise’s sixth film and a long-awaited deep dive into the 50th Annual Hunger Games — the brutal Quarter Quell that shaped Haymitch Abernathy long before he became Katniss Everdeen’s mentor.

Anchored by Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel, the project reunites much of the creative leadership behind the series and introduces a new generation of actors stepping into some of its most recognizable roles. With the book now in stores and the first teaser trailer released on November 20, 2025, here’s a clear look at everything confirmed so far.

What is Sunrise on the Reaping about?

The film adapts Collins’ novel Sunrise on the Reaping, set 24 years before the 2008 Hunger Games. It follows a young Haymitch Abernathy, the future District 12 mentor, as he’s thrust into the 50th Hunger Games — better known as the Second Quarter Quell.

This particular Games infamously doubled the number of tributes: two boys and two girls from each district, resulting in the bloodiest arena in Panem’s history. Haymitch, hailing from District 12, enters the arena alongside characters closely tied to him in the book, including Maysilee Donner and his love interest, Lenore Dove.

Collins said she drew inspiration from philosopher David Hume’s exploration of “implicit submission” and the power of narrative control. The prequel expands thematically into propaganda, the shaping of public memory, and the question that has echoed through the series: “Real or not real?”

Why does this story matter in the larger Hunger Games timeline?

Haymitch’s Quarter Quell victory is one of the most referenced but least explored moments in the original trilogy. His trauma, distrust of the Capitol, and complicated mentorship of Katniss all stem from what happened in the 50th Games. Sunrise on the Reaping marks the first time that history is dramatized on screen, positioning the film as a pivotal bridge between Panem’s past and the saga fans already know.

Who stars in Sunrise on the Reaping?

In April 2025, Lionsgate confirmed its leads:

  • Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy
  • Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird
  • McKenna Grace as Maysilee Donner

Several notable castings followed, adding familiar characters with new faces:

  • Maya Hawke as Wiress
  • Ralph Fiennes as President Snow
  • Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket
  • Glenn Close as Drusilla
  • Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman
  • Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee Latier
  • Lili Taylor as Mags Flanagan
  • Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow

“The Hunger Games franchise has long been a launching pad for remarkable young actors, and Jo and Whitney carry that legacy forward with incredible heart, depth, and fire,” co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Erin Westerman said in a press release.

Who is directing Sunrise on the Reaping?

The creative core of Panem is back. Francis Lawrence, the driving force behind Catching Fire, both Mockingjay films, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, returns to direct the film. Screenwriter Billy Ray, who launched the franchise onscreen with the 2012 adaptation, also rejoins the team. And producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson maintain their long-standing stewardship of the franchise.

Is there a trailer for Sunrise on the Reaping?

Yes. The first official teaser premiered on November 20, 2025, exactly one year ahead of release. The footage opens with Glenn Close’s Drusilla announcing the “glorious reaping of District 12,” offering the first look at the meadow that will become the arena. The trailer highlights the doubled tributes, the Quarter Quell twist, and the grim spectacle that defines Haymitch’s Games.

When does Sunrise on the Reaping come out?

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will debut exclusively in theaters on November 20, 2026, in IMAX.

What book is the movie based on?

The film is adapted from Suzanne Collins’ novel Sunrise on the Reaping, published in 2025. Notably, Lionsgate announced the adaptation before Collins had completed the manuscript; a testament to just how powerful the Hunger Games brand remains.

Where can I watch the previous Hunger Games films?

The franchise is available across multiple streaming platform, including Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Crunchyroll, Apple TV, Airtel XStream, and more, depending on your location.
