Sony Pictures has officially locked in the next chapter of Aaron Sorkin’s Facebook saga. The studio confirmed Friday that The Social Reckoning, a follow-up to 2010’s The Social Network, will arrive in theaters October 9, 2026—nearly sixteen years after the original became a cultural touchstone.
The long-rumored project, written and directed by Sorkin, brings together a cast of award-winning talent to dramatize the events surrounding the 2021 Facebook whistleblower scandal. Jeremy Strong, fresh off Succession and The Apprentice, will take on the role of Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Mikey Madison, who recently won an Oscar for Anora, portrays whistleblower Frances Haugen, the former Facebook engineer whose disclosures exposed the company’s internal knowledge of harms tied to misinformation and teen mental health.
Golden Globe and Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White will play Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, whose reporting—known as “The Facebook Files”—transformed Haugen’s leaks into a global reckoning. Comedian and actor Bill Burr also joins the ensemble, with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Stuart Besser, and Sorkin producing.
Described as a “companion piece” rather than a direct sequel, The Social Reckoning revisits the themes of power, ambition, and accountability that fueled The Social Network, this time set nearly two decades after Facebook’s inception. The narrative follows Haugen’s decision to enlist Horwitz, launching a risky collaboration that exposed one of the most powerful corporations in the world to public scrutiny.
As production begins next month, the release date positions the film during the Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday frame, where it will compete with Universal and Blumhouse’s Other Mommy, directed by Rob Savage, and Paramount Animation’s The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.
Sorkin’s original film, adapted from Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires, grossed more than $226 million worldwide in 2010 and won three Academy Awards from eight nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin. It also catapulted its cast—Jesse Eisenberg, Rooney Mara, Andrew Garfield, and Armie Hammer—into stardom. With The Social Reckoning, the filmmaker once again taps into Silicon Valley’s turbulent intersection with politics, media, and human behavior.
If Sorkin’s signature rapid-fire dialogue and meticulous eye for moral ambiguity return intact, The Social Reckoning may well become one of the most anticipated dramas of 2026.
