Creativity for a cause : Move A Muscle bridges gaps between art and social change

Move A Muscle returns for a fourth edition

Creativity and a good cause take centre stage with the fourth edition of Move A Muscle

A movement rooted in uplifting artists and affecting social change, Move A Muscle was started by freelance writer Nimmy as a humble effort to offer safe and supportive space for artists to flourish amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking of the event’s origin, she says, “During the pandemic, a lawyer friend of mine reached out asking if I can contribute funds to help out struggling folk artists in Tamil Nadu. It was a time when many artists where losing their livelihood and I thought ‘only artists can understand the struggles of other artists’ so we could come together and help each other – that’s how Move A Muscle was born.”

Beginning with virtual music shows and film discussions to raise funds, this community-powered initiative has grown slowly but steadily with artists getting the opportunity to showcase their talents over three editions.

Each edition brings together artists across disciplines to showcase their talents while also raising funds for meaningful causes and helping sections of society that need it.

In the first edition, funds went towards old age home supplies. Raising money for a safe space library for sexual health was the goal of the second edition and the third edition focused on assisting all-women autorickshaw driver group.

This year the goal is to raise funds for children with cancer, to help their kitchens provide more nutritious food and to make their wards a brighter space.

For this fourth edition, Nimmy also hopes to reward creatives for their efforts. She says, “I want to make this edition bigger. Previously, artists performed for a small token of appreciation, but this time I wanted to give them a cash prize so I came up with the idea for a dance competition.”

An initiative that is not just a showcase of talent and but a show of solidarity as well, Nimmy’s modest efforts lays the foundation for a better future for both artists and society at large.

She reflects, “Art can champion social change and even if not something big, it will stimulate the next generation to take up something and contribute towards change.”

Bridging the gap between creativity with community care, Move A Muscle is making ripples of change with small yet impactful steps.
