After a two-year hiatus marked by personal battles and public vulnerability, Lewis Capaldi makes a powerful comeback with his brand new single, “Survive”. Released last week, the track marks the Scottish singer-songwriter’s first new material since stepping back from the spotlight in 2023 to focus on his mental and physical health.

Written alongside longtime collaborator RØMANS—the same creative partner behind Capaldi’s global mega hit “Someone You Loved”, “Survive” is a raw, emotionally charged anthem that navigates the depths of despair and the determination to keep going.

“Most nights I fear that I’m not enough, I’ve had my share of Monday mornings when I can’t get up,” Capaldi admits in the opening lines, setting the tone for a brutally honest exploration of anxiety, burnout, vulnerability and self-doubt. But as the chorus soars, so does the resolve: “I swear to God I’ll survive, if it kills me to/ I’m gonna’ get up and try, if it’s the last thing I’ll do.”

The release follows Capaldi’s emotional return to the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury this past weekend—his first public performance in two years. In 2023, Capaldi’s Glastonbury set was cut short as he struggled with symptoms of Tourette’s syndrome, prompting a heartfelt crowd singalong and an eventual career pause. This year, he returned to the very same stage, determined to “finish what [he] couldn’t finish,” debuting “Survive” to a visibly moved audience.

“It’s so good to be back,” he told the crowd, fighting back tears. “I thought maybe this return wouldn’t happen. Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, it means the f***ing world. I’m back, baby!”

Lewis Capaldi had quietly begun his re-entry earlier this year, performing low-key warm-up gigs in Scotland in partnership with mental health charity CALM during Mental Health Awareness Week. These intimate shows allowed the singer to reconnect with performing without pressure or commercial expectations, a vital step after what he described as a turbulent personal chapter.

“Survive” follows the 2023 release of Capaldi’s sophomore album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, which debuted at No. 1 in the UK and produced chart-toppers including “Pointless” and “Wish You The Best”. His 2023 Netflix documentary How I’m Feeling Now offered fans an unfiltered glimpse into his struggles with fame and health, earning critical acclaim and a GRAMMY nomination.

With “Survive”, Capaldi reclaims his space in music with sincerity, courage, and heart. It’s a triumphant reminder that resilience doesn’t have to look perfect—it just has to keep going.
