Sarah Shafey is putting Los Angeles in the rearview mirror and looking ahead on “Route 25,” the latest single from the Egyptian-Canadian artist’s forthcoming album By Design.
The alt-pop track draws on Shafey’s move from Toronto to Los Angeles, turning the distance between the two cities into a backdrop for a song about starting over. Its steady, late-night groove and expansive vocal lines evoke the particular freedom of driving with nowhere to be, while the production leans into the romance of the West Coast rather than treating the journey as a straightforward departure.

“Route 25” follows Shafey through that transition without dwelling too heavily on what she left behind. Instead, the song stays focused on the momentum of moving forward, pairing atmospheric alt-pop production with rock elements and a spacious arrangement that keeps the vocal melody front and centre.
That sense of independence continues into By Design, which Shafey is currently recording with Grammy-winning producer Tristan Boston. The album follows her previous record, The Paper Bag Princess, while moving towards what she describes as greater self-sovereignty and clarity.
“Route 25” is also the first glimpse into how the new material translates beyond the studio. Shafey has recently introduced a new live set backed by an all-female band, with plans for a forthcoming tour.
For Shafey, the single’s destination is ultimately personal. “I hope this song gives women permission to choose peace and freedom,” she says. “I want listeners to feel that weight lift, leave the past in the rearview, and realize they have the power to rebuild on their own terms.”
By Design is slated for release in 2027, with “Route 25” serving as its lead single. Listen to the track below:
